Little Superhero, Seven year old saves woman's life after being hit by car

Who said small wasn't powerful? On October 12th a young local boy from Hanley Village saved a woman's life! Seven year old Austin Good was playing outside his mother's store when a young woman was hit while on her bicycle. The whole accident happen when a car ran a red light while in a hurry.

When the accident first happened, Austin was playing outside his mother's book store. The young woman was then hit and thrown off her bicycle and ended up laying on the curb and had received minor injuries to her head. Austin calmly ran into his mother's shop while she was in the back, and called 9-1-1. The boy told the operator that a girl had been hurt and that they needed to get to Book's Galore on Taint Street very fast!

The ambulance has said that if she had of been there for four more minutes, the injury to her head could have caused long term damage. Thank's to Austin for calling 9-1-1 right away and knowing exactly what to do and how to stay calm, he saved the woman's life.

Local new's interviewed the young boy and asked him how he stayed so calm and knew what to do in that situation, to which Austin replied "I knew I needed to help her because I know I would want someone to help me and I wanted to be someone's super hero! My mommy taught me to always help other's and that if anyone got hurt to call 9-1-1."

The local woman is now on her road to recovery and is doing much better. She is thankful to Austin and his mother for teaching him what to do in that situation, she also told local new's that Austin definitely is her little super hero!

Starting with the Basics

The article "Potent Pot: How marijuana got so strong and what it means for legalization" by Brent Bambury was posted on Friday, November 14, 2014. The article is about the difference between marijuana 30 years ago and now. Marijuana grown today is 300 to 400 percent more stronger than it was. This is a problem because its affecting the brain and changing the shape, and also effecting the grey matter in our brain. The lead is very effective because marijuana is very controversial and also many people use it. This is interesting and eye catching because many people are either for or against marijuana and this is bringing up the issue that it may not be legalized due to its effects. Lesley Campbell a biologist at Ryerson Univsersity who is studying marijuana growing conditions says "It seems as if there is a long term consequence to habitual use by teenagers. When we talk about teenagers we forget that brains develop in humans up until at least 24-years-old so that developmental stage can be quite broad and should include more young people than just teenagers" In this article the most eye catching information was put first, because its talking about how big of a difference there is today compared to years ago, and the rest of the article is talking about how controversial it is for them to legalize it when they know the long term effects. I think this articles ending was a bit boring because its just a quote of what someone had to say about how if they do legalize marijuana they will lessen the potency and also talking about how some strains do not even effect you what so ever. I think they could of ending it in a better way.

The article "Tattoo-removal procedures leave clients 'horrified'" scarred for life" by CBC News was posted on Monday, November 17th, 2014. The article is about how at least 18 woman are now horribly scarred after getting their tattoo removed due to burns in Montreal at a tattoo removal service called 'Bye Bye Tattoo'. The lead is very effective for this article because its helping warn people of the dangers of getting their tattoo removed, especially by a service you are not 100% sure of, or if they happen to go to this exact tattoo removal place that has caused problems in Montreal. Dr. Charles Bernard who is the President-Director General of the Quebec College of Physicians is quoted saying "You should be very careful when choosing what technique is used to do this, and always see an accredited professional" The most important information was told at the very first of this article, which was what was going on exactly and where and how many people it has effected! The ending of this article wasn't that good, but also there wasn't much any other way it could of ended.

The article "Chikungunya, mosquito-borne virus, infected more than 200 Canadians" was posted on Wednesday October 22nd, 2014 and written by The Canadian Press. This article is about the disease Chikungunya, which is transmitted by mosquito's and how it has effected 201 Canadian's as of October 1st. The lead of this is very effective because it's scary to know another disease is going around, since Ebola has recently become a big scare. It's also good for Canadian's to know that this is going around, the symptoms and why it started! The World Health Organization is quoted by saying "But in some cases joint pain may persist for several months, or even years," and "Occasional cases of eye, neurological and heart complications have been reported, as well as gastrointestinal complaints. Serious complications are not common, but in older people, the disease can contribute to the cause of death." The more interesting information was more in the middle and end, telling you how this all started and where and also if it causes long term problems or death, which isn't likely, but still possible. This article had a good ending, because it gives you important information on the long term or short term effects and also if this disease can be fatal.

Reflection Entry #1 - First Newspapers

Delivery Information:There is are many differences in the way newspapers today, and newspapers years ago presented their information, and also a huge difference in how they were created! Today, we have very clean, crisp and clear news papers, which are made easy to read. Years ago, newspapers were small with only one or two sheets of paper, and didn't tell much about community news, but news from Europe mainly and things to do with the war's going on. The big difference was that it was not easy to get your information for the newspapers, new's traveled by mouth, which means it would take much longer to get all the information together. Today, we can just search up something on the internet and there it is!

Newspaper Suppression:Personally, I believe Publick Occurrences deserved freedom of speech, even if they were speaking about the government. It's unfair that they were shut down, just for speaking about their views on the government, and its clear whatever they had to say, the government didn't like. Of all things the government has control over, they should focus on real life issues, rather than what someone is saying in a paper.

A newspaper before its time:Publick Occurrences talked about controversial information and got news out there that was more risky to post, which is a lot like our internet today, because EVERYTHING gets posted there. I agree that they were "a source of interactive journalism a full three centuries before the Internet." because they are what you would consider "internet" back in their time, they were the most advanced at the time, even if they did not have the technology we have today.

Publishing today: Newspapers today can post critical things about the government, businesses and etc. because they are the voice of the people, and they share their opinions and reviews on things. They can let people know the truth about whats going on, or personal experiences and I think that they can continue to do that, because the people have more say over things than what the government and businesses do. They have freedom of speech to say whatever they want, which may not be good for the government and others, but is good for the people who deserve to know the truth.

Newspapers in Canada: I'm not overly surprised that the first newspaper was posted in Halifax, but I would of figured it would come from a more larger province that could afford to put more money into making their newspapers, or would receive more information to add to them to make it more popular. Halifax is a large city in Canada that people know of, so its understandable that it would start there.

Time capsule

In the time capsule I would put…

Baby doll
I got a baby doll when I was around 4-5 and when you’re a kid you play with your toys constantly, and this toy was a big part of my childhood. Today, not many kids even play with toys, especially baby dolls, so adding this to the time capsule would be interesting for children to see what someone their age played with as a child.

A picture of the landscape from where I live
Having a picture of what everything looks like from where I live could be interesting because forests could become sparse and houses or yards will most likely be completely different in the future.

A record player w/ record
Putting a record in the time capsule would be interesting because records are already going out of style and have been for a while after iPod’s, CD’s and other ways of listening to music have been invented, and in the future, those things will most likely be a rarely used item.

Music from 2012 on a usb and some of my favourite music
I would put music in because music changes a lot over time and having people compare the music from 2012 to music of 2112 because they might not know of some artists that were out in 2012.

Pictures on the usb
I would have pictures on the usb as well so they could see what my family, friends and I looked like, because fashion and styles will definitely change in 100 years.

Hello people of 2112! My name is Kelsey, and I am 15 years old in the year 2012. I live with my mother and 2 cats in a small house.

I bet things in 2112 are completely different then how they are in 2012. Your music, education, fashion, and basically everything will have some sort of change compared to my time. Music will probably be so different since the artists I have in my time passed away by now, but genre’s will most likely be similar and you will have many more! My favourite genre is indie or alternative. I’m sure that the technology is highly advanced compared to our newly used touch screen products. I want you to spend as much time as you can with family or friends and not rely completely on technology. Landscape also must have changed greatly over time and hopefully is being taken care of, and if not you, please start because having my relatives and yours being healthy and alive is important. Continue t be kind to everyone and greet everyone nicely like we do today, and enjoy life to the fullest!

Good luck, sincerely Kelsey Keenan.

The neighborhood

Little Jonah never went outside before. His parents were always afraid if he went out into the world he would get hurt, so he spent his days inside, looking out the window, wondering when the day would come that he could leave his house and be able to do something outside. A day like any other, Jonah woke up, in his room filled with toys that were now boring to him. It was filled with lots of new toys that were what every kid dreamed of, but those toys weren’t as fulfilling as going outside and playing with friends. This day wasn’t just like any other; his parents were going away on a trip and trusted his grandparents to take care of him. His grandparents bickered about everything so when he woke up, decided that this was the day he would get outside and live his life.

Once he finished his breakfast, he grabbed some cookies and a few juice boxes, put them in his lunchbox and walked out to the front door without being noticed. His grandparents were too busy fighting about the way eggs were cooked to notice him. Jonah was sort of afraid to open the door, after all, there had to be a reason that his parents didn’t want him going outside. Jonah shook his head and realized that he had to do this; just going out for a day wouldn’t hurt anyways. He slowly turned the doorknob a bit, and peeked behind him to see if they were looking. He cracked the door open a little, and slipped outdoors and kept his eyes shut. As he closed the door, he slowly turned around and opened his eyes. He couldn’t believe how beautiful it was outside, and the feeling of fresh air hitting his skin was wonderful.
The first thing he saw was a wagon from a local child, but no one was around, so he grabbed it, and sat his lunch box in it. He looked around, wondering where to go first, and began hauling his new little red wagon until he got to a little teepee that was set up and had strange sounds coming from it. He slowly stepped inside to see a man dressed in odd clothes beating on a drum and making weird noises and had paint all over his face. Jonah stared blankly at him and the man soon looked up, startled and said “Small child why are in my peaceful place of home.” Jonah still dumbfounded replied with “I-I don’t know...” The strange man could tell Jonah did not understand what he was doing and began to feel bad for him “Would you like to learn how to make wonderful music like I make?” Jonah’s face calmed a bit and he nodded. The man was kind and offered to let Jonah keep on his drum as long as he promised to continue playing and teach others, so Jonah agreed and went on his way. He began walking down the sidewalk until he got to what was considered his neighbors.

When Jonah looked outside he always noticed a little girl that was next door who often had friends over and played in her front yard. Seeing this always made Jonah sad and now was the chance to finally meet her. Jonah slowly made his way up the steps leading to the yellow house and stared at the door. He made a little knock, but knew he didn’t make enough noise for anyone inside to hear. He knocked again, and waited a few seconds then began to hear faint footsteps becoming louder until the door finally opened up. A women, most likely the mother, looked down at him, turned around and yelled out to her daughter that one of her friends were here to play. The little girl came down slowly, knowing she had no plans to play with someone today, and went over to the door. “Who are you?” she said staring at Jonah, a boy she had never seen before. “I’m… Jonah, your neighbor.”, he replied. The girl looked at him and said “So you are the boy who always stays up in his room looking out the window, I’m Tabby, what is your name?” Jonah replied by telling his name, and she then invited him in for tea. Jonah knew it was getting at least three o’clock and he needed to come home soon because he grandparents could already be worried sick. “I’m sorry, but I can’t I need to go home soon, but I will come over again and we can play.” Tabby frowned a bit, and said it was fine and said goodbye to her new friend.

Jonah knew he had to get home, but noticed a beautiful forest beside Tabby’s house, and decided to venture and see it, since he did not see live nature before.
When he got into the forest it was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. He sat for awhile, and just took in everything that he missed out on. Going home would be awful, and he knew he would miss seeing all of this, so he decided that when his parents got home, he had to make things change. He noticed it was beginning to get dark, and he had to get home before anyone noticed he was gone.

Jonah left the forest and hurried back home. First, he peeked in the window, seeing if his grandparents were around. He could see them in the kitchen once again, sitting at the table, having some tea, but soon both of their hands flew up in the air and they began to bicker once again. He slipped into the door and slowly ran upstairs to his room and sat on his bed. Jonah was so played out from his adventure today, but knew it had to be done again. Soon his eyes were open again and it was daylight. He could hear his parents downstairs talking to his grandparents about their trip. He started downstairs to finally tell his parents how he felt and what he had done, and hoped more than anything that they would understand and would allow him to go out. He walked up to his parents who were glad to see him, and asked them to sit down. They began to look worried and slowly sat down. He explained to them how he felt and that he had secretly left as they were gone. Surprisingly his parents were perfectly fine with him going outside and only made him stay inside so he could learn the real meaning of life and take everything into consideration.
